Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
