Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
