Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
